# DWF Viewer

Open DWF and DWFx drawings online without AutoCAD or Autodesk software. Pan, zoom, measure, and toggle layers for free.

**Category:** 3D Model Viewer Tools (`preview`)
**Subgroup:** 2D Drawing Viewers (`drawing-viewer`)

**HTML:** https://any3d.cc/en-US/tools/dwf-viewer

> Runs entirely in the browser. Files are not uploaded to Any3D servers.

## Overview

DWF and DWFx are secure, compressed file formats developed by Autodesk for sharing and reviewing drawings. This viewer opens both DWF and DWFx files directly in your web browser. Drag with the left or middle mouse button to pan, and scroll the wheel to zoom toward the cursor. Use the layer panel to show or hide layers. Turn on Measure in the left panel to measure lengths, angles, and areas with smart snapping. All files are decoded locally with WebAssembly, ensuring your drawings remain private on your device.

### DWF vs DWG: what's the difference?

DWG is the full, editable source drawing format of AutoCAD. DWF (Design Web Format) is a lightweight, compressed version intended for distribution and review. DWF protects original CAD data while being roughly one-tenth the size of a DWG.

| | DWF / DWFx | DWG |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Purpose | Design distribution and review | Source drafting and CAD modeling |
| File Size | Very small (highly compressed vector) | Usually much larger |
| Editability | Read-only to protect design integrity | Fully editable |
| Software Needed | Web browser (no CAD needed) | Full CAD seat required |

### If your DWF drawing looks incomplete

Most display issues result from layer states or font settings inside the original CAD file:

| Problem | Likely cause | What to do |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Drawing appears empty | Layers are turned off or geometry is far from the origin | Turn on all layers in the left panel and double-click the viewport to zoom to extents. |
| Text labels are missing | The drawing uses custom SHX fonts that were not embedded | When exporting DWF from AutoCAD, choose to convert text to geometry or embed fonts. |
| File fails to open | The file was corrupted during download or export | Re-export a standard DWF or DWFx from your CAD program and try again. |

## FAQ

### How can I open a DWF or DWFx file without AutoCAD?

Drag the DWF or DWFx file onto this page or click to select it, and the drawing opens in your browser. There is no download, installation, or sign-up required, unlike desktop tools like Autodesk Design Review.

### What is the difference between DWF and DWFx?

DWF is Autodesk's original binary format for design web format. DWFx is the modern version based on the Microsoft XPS standard and ZIP packaging. This viewer seamlessly supports both DWF and DWFx.

### Can I measure distances in the DWF drawing?

Yes. Turn on Measure in the left panel, then click points on the 2D view. Snap catches endpoints and corners of visible geometry. Length, angles, and areas are calculated directly in drawing coordinates.

### Will my DWF file be uploaded to a server?

No. The file is parsed and rendered locally in your browser via WebAssembly and never touches a server, which is essential for confidential client drawings.

### Can I turn layers on and off?

Yes. The left panel lists every layer in the file, allowing you to isolate outlines, dimensions, or text annotations easily.

### Can I edit a DWF file with this viewer?

No, DWF is inherently a read-only publication format intended for review and verification rather than CAD modification.

## About Configuration Options

### Layers

- **Show layer** (Default: on): Show or hide each layer's geometry, text, and dimensions. Hidden or frozen layers in the file start off.

### Measure

- **Measure mode** (Default: Length): What a click sequence measures. Values are in drawing units, not converted to millimeters or inches; up to {maxMeasurements} measurements stay in the list, each can be hidden or deleted. Keys 1, 2 and 3 switch modes.
  - `length` — Length: Polyline through 2 or more points; right-click or Enter to finish.
  - `angle` — Angle: Click the vertex, then one point on each side; shows 0–180°, optionally with the supplementary angle.
  - `area` — Area: Closed outline through 3 or more points; right-click or Enter to close.
- **Snap** (Default: on): Locks clicks to endpoints, corners and midpoints of visible lines, and to the nearest point on a line when zoomed in. S toggles it, hold Alt to ignore it, hold Shift for a wider reach.
