# DWG to SVG

Convert 2D DWG CAD drawings to clean SVG vector graphics with layer filtering on export.

**Category:** 3D Format Conversion Tools (`conversion`)
**Subgroup:** 3D Model Format Conversion (`model-conversion`)

> Runs entirely in the browser. Files are not uploaded to Any3D servers.

## Overview

This tool converts 2D DWG drawings directly into clean scalable vector graphics (SVG) in your browser. All drawing lines, polylines, arcs, and text are preserved as vector primitives. Turn layers off in the left panel and the exported SVG keeps only the visible layers; layers that are off or frozen in the file start switched off and can be turned back on in the panel. Strictly limited to 2D drawings; 3D solids and meshes are automatically intercepted.

## Tips

- Ensure your drawing contains flat 2D geometry before conversion
- Turn off layers you do not need before exporting to keep the SVG small
- Exported SVG files open losslessly in Illustrator, Inkscape, or LightBurn

## About Configuration Options

### Layers

- **Show layer** (Default: on): Show or hide each layer's geometry, text, and dimensions. The SVG export keeps only the layers left on; hidden or frozen layers in the file start off.

## Format Information

### Input format

- **Extension:** dwg
- **Full Name:** DWG (AutoCAD Drawing)
- **Type:** CAD Drawing
- **Format:** DWG
- **Tools:** [AutoCAD](https://www.autodesk.com/products/autocad), [BricsCAD](https://www.bricsys.com), [GstarCAD](https://www.gstarcad.net)
- **Open With:** [DWG Viewer](https://any3d.cc/en-US/tools/dwg-viewer)
- **Description:** DWG is the native drawing format of AutoCAD and a standard in architecture, engineering, and construction. It stores 2D and 3D drawing data including geometry, layers, blocks, text, and dimension annotations. DWG files are widely exchanged between professionals working with CAD software.
- **Supported Features:**
  - Native AutoCAD format with broad industry adoption
  - Stores geometry, layers, blocks, text and dimensions
  - Widely supported by CAD/CAM/CAE software
  - Suitable for architecture and engineering drawings
- **Notes:**
  - CAD software required for editing entities
  - Version compatibility can matter between CAD programs

### Output format

- **Extension:** svg
- **Full Name:** Scalable Vector Graphics
- **Type:** Vector Image
- **Format:** SVG
- **Tools:** [Inkscape](https://inkscape.org), [Adobe Illustrator](https://www.adobe.com/products/illustrator.html), [Figma](https://www.figma.com), [Affinity Designer](https://affinity.serif.com/designer)
- **Open With:** Vector Editor, Web Browser, [Inkscape](https://inkscape.org)
- **Description:** SVG is an XML-based vector image format that uses mathematical descriptions for shapes, paths, and text. It is resolution-independent, so edges remain sharp at any scale, making it ideal for logos, icons, and typography.

Its vector nature gives SVG clear advantages when converting to 3D: outlines are smooth and free of jagged edges, which is perfect for generating clean-edged reliefs or extruded text models. During conversion, note that complex paths and gradients may be simplified, and it is recommended to merge multiple layers before processing.
- **Supported Features:**
  - Resolution-independent vector graphics
  - Perfect sharp edges at any scale
  - Supports fills, strokes, and compound paths
  - Small file sizes for simple designs
- **Notes:**
  - Raster effects or embedded bitmaps may not convert as vectors
  - Complex SVGs with many paths may increase conversion time

## How to use

### 1. Select 2D DWG drawing

Drag and drop your AutoCAD 2D DWG file or click to browse from disk.

### 2. Preview and toggle layers

Inspect linework in the 2D canvas and switch layer visibility on or off.

### 3. Convert to vector geometry

Lines, curves, and text become crisp vector paths.

### 4. Download clean SVG

Save the SVG with only the layers you left visible.

## FAQ

### Why does this converter only support 2D DWG drawings?

SVG is a flat two-dimensional format, so 3D solids and volumetric meshes cannot be represented in it. Files that contain 3D geometry are stopped before conversion to avoid distorted flat output.

### How do I export only certain DWG layers to SVG?

Switch off the layers you do not need in the left panel, then export: only the visible layers are written to the SVG. Layers that are off or frozen in the file start hidden, and you can switch them back on in the panel before exporting.

### Are block references preserved?

Yes. Blocks appear in the exported SVG at the same position and scale as in the preview, including nested blocks.

### Do splines and arcs stay smooth in the SVG?

Yes. Curves are written as real curves instead of short straight segments, so the outline stays clean at any zoom level.

### Is the exported SVG ready for laser cutting or CNC routing?

Yes. The generated SVG uses clean, continuous stroke paths without unwanted rasterization or fill artifacts. It can be directly loaded into CAM software like LightBurn or LaserWeb for precise vector cutting.

### Which AutoCAD DWG file versions are supported?

The converter opens the main AutoCAD DWG versions, from R14 and 2000 up to 2018. You do not need AutoCAD or any plugin installed.
