# FBX Texture Compression

Optimize FBX maps; export as FBX.

**Category:** 3D Model Optimization Tools (`optimization`)
**Subgroup:** 3D Model Compression (`compression-general`)

> Runs entirely in the browser. Files are not uploaded to Any3D servers.

## Overview

Scale and transcode textures referenced by FBX files without touching geometry or animation. Output stays in FBX; models with separate maps are bundled with the optimized textures in a ZIP. Textures are recompressed locally in your browser.

## About Configuration Options

### Texture / Image

- **Max Texture Size** (Default: 1024px): Clamp all textures to this maximum dimension, reducing texture memory and file size.
  - `256` — 256px
  - `512` — 512px
  - `1024` — 1024px (Recommended)
  - `2048` — 2048px
  - `4096` — 4096px
  - `0` — Keep Original Size
- **Texture Format** (Default: Keep Original Format): Convert textures to a more efficient format. WebP offers excellent compression and wide browser support.
  - `png` — PNG
  - `original` — Keep Original Format

## Format Information

### Input / Output

- **Extension:** fbx
- **Full Name:** Autodesk FBX
- **Type:** 3D Model
- **Format:** FBX
- **Tools:** [Autodesk Maya](https://www.autodesk.com/products/maya/overview), [Blender](https://www.blender.org), [Unity](https://unity.com), [Unreal Engine](https://www.unrealengine.com)
- **Open With:** [Blender](https://www.blender.org), Windows 3D Viewer, [3D Model Viewer](https://any3d.cc/en-US/tools/3dmodel-viewer)
- **Description:** FBX is a 3D exchange format by Autodesk, used in game development, animation, and visual effects. It stores meshes, skeletal bindings, animation curves, and material references. Widely used for transfers between Maya, 3ds Max, Unity, and Unreal.

FBX's main weakness is texture handling: it references external files instead of embedding them, causing material loss when moving folders. Re-export with embedded textures or convert to a container format. FBX is proprietary and version-specific; files from newer software may fail in older tools. Keep a GLB or OBJ as neutral backup for web delivery.
- **Supported Features:**
  - Supports embedded textures and materials
  - Skeleton and animation support
  - Industry standard for game and VFX pipelines
- **Notes:**
  - FBX may reference external texture files not embedded in the binary
  - Some FBX files use procedural materials without image textures

## How to use

### 1. Upload your FBX model

Drop FBX

### 2. Review Textures

Inspect maps

### 3. Download the FBX package

Compress and download FBX

## FAQ

### Will the result keep the FBX format?

Yes, the download stays FBX. If the model uses separate texture files, the output is a ZIP containing the optimized FBX and its maps, so you can drop it straight back into Maya, Blender, 3ds Max, or your game engine without re-exporting.

### How are FBX files with separate textures delivered?

The output is a ZIP archive containing the optimized FBX and the compressed texture files. Relative references are preserved, so the FBX finds its maps as soon as you extract the archive. Keep the folder structure intact when you move or share it.

### Which input texture formats are supported?

Common bitmap formats such as PNG, JPEG, WebP, BMP, TGA, and GIF are supported. The output format is set by the Texture Format setting (WebP/JPEG/PNG): WebP gives the best size/quality balance for web, PNG preserves alpha and detail, JPEG suits photo-like diffuse maps.

### Will animations be affected?

No. Only the texture bitmaps are resized and re-encoded; animation curves, skeletons, blend shapes, and geometry are exported unchanged. The FBX keeps the same structure, so nothing needs to be re-rigged or re-animated.

### Do embedded and external textures behave differently?

Embedded textures are re-encoded in place inside the FBX. External textures are re-encoded and delivered alongside the FBX in the ZIP, with references rewritten to the new files. In both cases the optimized FBX stays fully usable.

### Will the output open in Maya, Blender, or Unity?

Yes. The output is a standard FBX with the same hierarchy, materials, and texture references, so it imports into Maya, 3ds Max, Blender, Unity, and Unreal without conversion.

### Can textures in older FBX files be compressed?

The tool compresses textures in FBX 6.1 (FileVersion 6100) and newer files, ASCII or binary. Files older than 6.1 fail during parsing because their structure is different. Update them by re-exporting from modern 3D software, then compress here.
