# FBX Texture Extractor

Extract diffuse, normal, roughness, and other maps from FBX, supporting both embedded and external references.

**Category:** 3D Model Analysis Tools (`analysis`)
**Subgroup:** Texture Extraction (`texture-analysis`)

**HTML:** https://any3d.cc/en-US/tools/fbx-texture-extractor

> Runs entirely in the browser. Files are not uploaded to Any3D servers.

## Overview

FBX files can have textures embedded or stored externally. This tool lists common material channels. If textures are external references, place them in the same folder as the FBX or select them together, then download all as a package.

## Tips

- Provide external textures together with the FBX file.
- Keep original filenames and channel suffixes when possible.
- No upload, processed locally.

## About Configuration Options

### Export options

- **All textures ZIP**: Export every texture as original-resolution PNG and download them in a single ZIP. This is the default download action.
- **Each material as GLB (ZIP)**: Export each material as its own mesh-free GLB (material definition + textures only), then pack them into a ZIP, useful for splitting a material library.
- **All materials as one GLB**: Merge every material into a single GLB file for one-shot import of the full material set.
- **Single texture PNG**: Download the currently selected texture as lossless PNG at original resolution. KTX2 compressed maps are converted to PNG automatically.
- **Single material GLB**: Export the selected material as a standalone mesh-free GLB for reuse in Blender, Unity, Unreal, and similar tools.
- **Multi-select materials**: Hold Ctrl (Cmd on Mac) and click materials in the sidebar to select several, then batch-download them as a ZIP. Press Esc to clear the selection.

### Browse and filter

- **Search**: Filter the sidebar list by material name or texture file name.
- **Texture type**: Filter by map slot such as diffuse, normal, roughness, metalness, emissive, or AO. Shown only when the model has more than one slot type.

### Inspect properties

- **Material properties**: Inspect material type (for example Standard PBR), base color, metalness, roughness, and other scalar or color fields. Copy individual rows or export full JSON.
- **Texture properties**: Inspect resolution, color space, wrap mode, filter mode, and anisotropy sampling parameters.
- **Material sphere preview**: Preview the material on a 3D sphere with HDR environment lighting to judge maps and PBR parameters at a glance.
- **Wireframe / solid**: Toggle wireframe and solid rendering in the model preview to inspect mesh topology.

## Format Information

### Input format

- **Extension:** fbx
- **Full Name:** Autodesk FBX
- **Type:** 3D Model
- **Format:** FBX
- **Tools:** [Autodesk Maya](https://www.autodesk.com/products/maya/overview), [Blender](https://www.blender.org), [Unity](https://unity.com), [Unreal Engine](https://www.unrealengine.com)
- **Open With:** [Blender](https://www.blender.org), Windows 3D Viewer, [3D Model Viewer](https://any3d.cc/en-US/tools/3dmodel-viewer)
- **Description:** FBX is a 3D exchange format by Autodesk, used in game development, animation, and visual effects. It stores meshes, skeletal bindings, animation curves, and material references. Widely used for transfers between Maya, 3ds Max, Unity, and Unreal.

FBX's main weakness is texture handling: it references external files instead of embedding them, causing material loss when moving folders. Re-export with embedded textures or convert to a container format. FBX is proprietary and version-specific; files from newer software may fail in older tools. Keep a GLB or OBJ as neutral backup for web delivery.
- **Supported Features:**
  - Supports embedded textures and materials
  - Skeleton and animation support
  - Industry standard for game and VFX pipelines
- **Notes:**
  - FBX may reference external texture files not embedded in the binary
  - Some FBX files use procedural materials without image textures

### Output format

- **Extension:** png
- **Full Name:** Extracted Textures and Materials
- **Type:** Image / Material Package
- **Format:** PNG / Material GLB / ZIP
- **Tools:** [Photoshop](https://www.adobe.com/products/photoshop.html), [Blender](https://www.blender.org), [GIMP](https://www.gimp.org)
- **Open With:** Image Editor, [3D Model Viewer](https://any3d.cc/en-US/tools/3dmodel-viewer)
- **Description:** Textures are exported as lossless PNG at original resolution. Materials can also be exported as mesh-free GLB (containing only material definitions and textures) for reuse as a material library, or multiple textures/materials can be packaged as a ZIP for download.
- **Supported Features:**
  - PNG download per texture
  - Mesh-free material GLB export
  - ZIP package for multiple textures or materials
  - Original resolution preserved
- **Notes:**
  - KTX2-compressed textures are converted to PNG on export
  - Material GLB contains only materials and textures, no mesh geometry
  - Multi-select packs materials as ZIP with one GLB per material

## How to use

### 1. Upload Model

Drag and drop your 3D model file onto the upload area, or click to browse.

### 2. Browse Textures

Click on materials and textures in the sidebar to preview.

### 3. Download Textures

Download individual textures as PNG, or export the material as GLB.

## FAQ

### Will the quality decrease?

No. The tool reads the original texture data directly from the FBX file without recompression or transcoding. The extracted images keep their original quality and data integrity.

### What channels are supported?

Diffuse, normal, roughness, metalness, ambient occlusion, emissive, and other common channels. The tool lists only the channels that actually exist in the file; missing channels are not shown.

### What about external textures?

Place them together with the FBX before selecting. If the paths can be resolved, they will be included in the package.

### What file formats are the extracted textures saved in?

The textures are saved in their original formats as embedded in the FBX file, such as PNG, JPEG, TGA, etc. No conversion is performed, ensuring the original quality and data integrity are preserved.

### Some of my FBX textures appear missing: what should I do?

Missing textures usually mean the FBX references external image files whose paths could not be resolved. Check whether the maps are embedded in the FBX or stored separately; if they are external, place them in the same folder as the FBX (or select them together) and run the extraction again.

### Can I combine this tool with the FBX texture compression tool?

Yes. Use the extractor to inspect and back up the original maps, then run the FBX Texture Compression tool to shrink the textures inside an FBX: geometry and animations are preserved, so you keep a smaller file that can still be extracted later.

### Can textures be extracted from older FBX files?

Extraction works on FBX 6.1 (FileVersion 6100) and newer, ASCII or binary. Game assets from around 2010 are often saved as 6.1 and extract normally. Files older than 6.1 are rejected during parsing, so re-export them with current 3D software first.
