# OBJ Viewer

View OBJ models online with full material and texture rendering. No installation needed, and your files stay private.

**Category:** 3D Model Viewer Tools (`preview`)

> Runs entirely in the browser. Files are not uploaded to Any3D servers.

## Overview

OBJ is a common format used by 3D modeling tools like Blender and Maya. Its color and surface detail live in companion MTL files and texture images. This viewer loads OBJ and material files together and renders the model in real time, so you can quickly check the result. The OBJ is parsed on your machine and nothing is uploaded, so unreleased work stays private.

## About Configuration Options

### Preview settings

- **Auto-rotate** (Default: Off): Slowly rotate the model around the vertical axis after loading for a full view. Can be toggled anytime in the left panel.
  - `on` — On: Auto-rotate after loading
  - `off` — Off (Recommended): Stay still, rotate manually only (default)

### Animation

- **Clips**: Number of animation clips stored in the file.
- **Bones**: Number of skeleton bones used for rigging and skinning.

## Format Information

- **Full Name:** Wavefront OBJ
- **Type:** 3D Model
- **Format:** OBJ

- **Description:** OBJ is an open 3D geometry format introduced by Wavefront in the 1980s. It uses human-readable text to record vertices, normals, UV coordinates, and face connections, and is supported by nearly all 3D software, making it a safe choice for cross-software mesh exchange. Materials and textures are usually defined in an accompanying .mtl file, which must be placed in the same directory.

OBJ does not contain animation or skeleton data, only static meshes. It is not suitable as a final format for character animation workflows. Additionally, the text encoding makes large model files bulky and complex scenes load slowly. For single-file delivery with embedded textures, GLB is a better option.
- **Supported Features:**
  - Human-readable text format
  - Separate geometry (.obj) and material (.mtl) files
  - Universal software support
  - UV coordinates and normal preservation
- **Notes:**
  - MTL file must stay with OBJ file for materials
  - No support for animation or skeletons

## FAQ

### What if an OBJ file won't open or displays incompletely?

Make sure you upload all required assets: the .obj file, the .mtl file, and every texture image. A ZIP archive containing them in one folder is the easiest way to avoid missing files.

### Why are the material and texture colors wrong?

This is usually caused by a mismatch between the image paths in the MTL file and the uploaded files. Put the textures in the same folder as the OBJ, or upload a ZIP from that folder.

### How can I view an OBJ model with multiple material groups?

Such models are automatically split into material groups. Upload all related files and you will see the assembled result with each material in place.

### Can I rotate and zoom to view the model?

Yes. Drag to rotate the view and use the scroll wheel to zoom. You can inspect the model from any angle with smooth performance and no extra software.

### Is OBJ a good format for sending models to clients or partners?

Yes. Nearly all 3D programs open OBJ, so it is a safe choice for sharing. Keep the .obj, .mtl, and texture files together and send them as a ZIP. For a true single-file option, convert to GLB.

### Can I preview photogrammetry OBJ scans?

Yes. Photogrammetry tools export textured OBJ meshes of scanned objects and scenes. Upload the OBJ along with its MTL and texture files, or a ZIP containing them, to inspect the scanned surface in detail.
