## Overview

PCD is a common point cloud format that stores surface points captured by 3D scanners or LiDAR sensors. It is often used in surveying, autonomous driving, and robotics. PCD files open directly, showing the point cloud's shape, color and intensity without installing any software.

### Point cloud or mesh?

A PCD file is a point cloud: loose dots measured on a surface. Most 3D programs and printers expect a mesh instead.

| | Point cloud (PCD) | Mesh (STL, OBJ) |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Made of | Separate points | Connected triangles |
| Usually comes from | 3D scanners, LiDAR, depth cameras | CAD and 3D modeling software |
| Has a surface | No, only points | Yes |
| Extra data | Color, intensity per point | Colors and textures |
| Ready to 3D print | No | Yes, if it is closed |

### What to do next with the point cloud

What do you want to do with the PCD file?

- **Check a scan quickly:** <strong>Stay here.</strong> Rotate, zoom and see the point colors stored in the file.
- **Turn it into a mesh or STL:** Use a reconstruction tool such as CloudCompare or Open3D.
- **Open it in software that prefers PLY:** Use PCD to PLY.
- **Clean, crop or measure the cloud:** Use desktop software such as CloudCompare.

## FAQ

### Can PCD files display color?

If the PCD file contains color data such as RGB, the viewer shows it automatically. If the file only has coordinates, the points appear white or gray, but you can still inspect them normally.

### The point cloud looks like a mass of dots. How do I explore it?

Drag to rotate the view and use the scroll wheel to zoom. This lets you inspect the overall shape as well as fine details from any angle, so you can understand the 3D structure easily.

### Which software's PCD files can I open?

Any standard PCD file works, whether it comes from a 3D scanner, a LiDAR sensor, or software like CloudCompare or PCL. This viewer opens those files directly.

### Will a huge point cloud make the viewer lag?

The viewer is optimized for point cloud preview, so common files with a few million points rotate smoothly. If you open an extremely large dataset with hundreds of millions of points, loading and interaction may be slower; consider viewing it in batches.

### Which programs create PCD files?

PCD is the native format of the Point Cloud Library (PCL), so robotics and ROS tools often produce it. CloudCompare can also save PCD.

### Can I view PLY or XYZ point clouds too?

Yes, with the PLY viewer and the XYZ viewer on this site.

## About Configuration Options

### Preview settings

- **Auto-rotate** (Default: Off): Slowly rotate the model around the vertical axis after loading for a full view. Can be toggled anytime in the left panel.
  - `on` — On: Auto-rotate after loading
  - `off` — Off (Recommended): Stay still, rotate manually only (default)

### Animation

- **Clips**: Number of animation clips stored in the file.
- **Bones**: Number of skeleton bones used for rigging and skinning.

## Format Information

### Input format

- **Extension:** pcd
- **Full Name:** Point Cloud Data (PCD)
- **Type:** 3D Model
- **Format:** PCD
- **Tools:** [Three.js](https://threejs.org), [Blender](https://www.blender.org)
- **Open With:** [Blender](https://www.blender.org), [View in PCD Viewer](https://any3d.cc/en-US/tools/pcd-viewer)
- **Description:** PCD is the native point cloud format of the Point Cloud Library (PCL), storing 3D point coordinates and optional attributes (color, normals, intensity, etc.) in an efficient manner. It supports both ASCII and binary encoding, making it a common data format in robotics, surveying, and 3D scanning.

PCD is designed for point cloud processing rather than rendering: it does not contain mesh faces, so when displayed directly, it appears as a point cloud. To obtain a solid model or for 3D printing, the point cloud typically needs to be reconstructed into a mesh (e.g., via Poisson reconstruction) and then exported as STL.
- **Supported Features:**
  - Real-time WebGL rendering
  - Orbit controls with rotate/pan/zoom
  - Wireframe and shaded display modes
  - Animation playback (if supported by format)
- **Notes:**
  - PCD point clouds can carry intensity and normal fields per point
