# STL Storage Format Converter

Upload an STL file, auto-detect ASCII or Binary storage format, convert to the other format with one click and compare file sizes. All processing is done locally in your browser, no upload required.

**Category:** 3D Format Conversion Tools (`conversion`)
**Subgroup:** 3D Model Format Conversion (`model-conversion`)

**HTML:** https://any3d.cc/en-US/tools/stl-format-converter

> Runs entirely in the browser. Files are not uploaded to Any3D servers.

## Overview

STL files have two storage formats: ASCII (human-readable text) and Binary (compact binary). This tool auto-detects the current format and converts to the other. Binary files are usually smaller and load faster; ASCII is easier to debug and hand-edit. The conversion runs locally in your browser, so the STL never leaves your machine.

## Tips

- Storage format is auto-detected after upload
- Binary STL is typically 4-5× smaller than ASCII
- Geometry remains unchanged; only the storage method changes
- Preview the model in the 3D viewer before downloading

## About Configuration Options

### Conversion

- **Target storage format** (Default: Binary): Conversion runs automatically when you switch the target storage format.
  - `binary` — Binary (Recommended): Compact binary storage format; smaller files and faster loads.
  - `ascii` — ASCII: Human-readable text storage format; larger files, easier to inspect.

## Format Information

### Input / Output

- **Extension:** stl
- **Full Name:** Stereolithography
- **Type:** 3D Mesh
- **Format:** STL (Binary / ASCII)
- **Tools:** [Cura](https://ultimaker.com/software/ultimaker-cura/), [PrusaSlicer](https://www.prusa3d.com/p/prusaslicer/), [Chitubox](https://www.chitubox.com), [Simplify3D](https://www.simplify3d.com)
- **Open With:** Slicer Software, [MeshLab](https://www.meshlab.net), Windows 3D Viewer, [STL Viewer Online](https://any3d.cc/en-US/tools/stl-viewer)
- **Description:** STL is the de facto standard mesh format in 3D printing, storing only triangular surface data since 1987, without color, texture, or material. Almost all slicers (Cura, PrusaSlicer, Bambu Studio, ChiTuBox) and printers directly support STL, ensuring its enduring popularity.

Two classic pitfalls: STL lacks unit definitions, making millimeters and inches indistinguishable on disk; always verify scale in your slicer. It also has ASCII (readable but 4-6x larger) and binary (compact, default) encodings. For multi-color printing, materials, or parameters, switch to 3MF, which carries richer print information while maintaining slicer compatibility.
- **Supported Features:**
  - Triangle mesh only, simple and universally compatible
  - Binary and ASCII encoding options
  - Directly importable into Cura, PrusaSlicer, Chitubox, etc.
- **Notes:**
  - Does not support colors, textures or materials
  - No unit definition; verify scale in your slicer
  - ASCII format is 4-6× larger than binary

### 2. Review Detection

See detected storage format and file size in the sidebar

### 3. Convert

Toggle target storage format if needed; conversion runs automatically

### 4. Download

Download the converted STL and compare sizes

## FAQ

### What is the difference between ASCII and Binary STL?

ASCII STL stores triangles as human-readable text; Binary STL stores them as compact binary data. Both represent the same geometry, but Binary files are typically much smaller.

### Will conversion change the model geometry?

No. Only the file encoding changes. The triangle data remains unchanged during loading and re-export.

### Which storage format should I use for 3D printing?

Most slicer software supports both formats. For large files, Binary STL is recommended due to smaller size and faster loading.

### Can color or texture information be preserved after conversion?

No. The STL format itself only stores triangle geometry data, not color, texture, or material information. The conversion process only changes the storage method and does not add or lose any geometry data.

### How much smaller is a Binary STL than an ASCII one?

Binary STL stores each triangle in a fixed 50-byte record, while ASCII writes the same numbers as readable text, so Binary files are typically 50-75% smaller for identical geometry. The exact ratio depends on the triangle count and the decimal precision of the ASCII file. The file info panel compares the size of both versions.

### Can this tool convert between units such as mm and inches?

No. STL files store no unit metadata, and this converter only changes the ASCII/Binary storage format: every dimension is preserved exactly. To change a model's physical size, rescale it in the model scale tool or in your slicer before or after conversion.

### Is Any3D completely free?

Yes, Any3D's core features are free to use forever. We provide format conversion, model optimization, and online preview at no cost, with no registration required.

### Are my files uploaded to your servers?

No. Files you select are processed only in your browser on this device, so they never leave your device and are never sent to our servers. We don't store any user files; after processing, related data in browser memory is released.

### Do I need to install software?

No installation required. Any3D is entirely browser-based; just open the webpage to use all features. It works on Windows, Mac, Linux, and other major operating systems.

### Is there a file size limit?

The processing capacity depends on your device performance and the model's vertex count and texture complexity, rather than file size alone. We impose no file size limit, but when a model exceeds what your device can handle, the page may lag or even crash.
