# STL Viewer

No installation needed. Drag and drop an STL file to preview it smoothly, rotate and zoom freely, inspect surface details, and get your model ready for 3D printing.

**Category:** 3D Model Viewer Tools (`preview`)
**Subgroup:** 3D Model Viewer (`model-viewer`)

**HTML:** https://any3d.cc/en-US/tools/stl-viewer

> Runs entirely in the browser. Files are not uploaded to Any3D servers.

## Overview

STL is the most widely used file format in 3D printing, supported by nearly every printer and slicer software. It stores only the model's geometry, not color or material. This viewer lets you open STL files directly and inspect the surface closely before printing, so you can catch issues early. Your STL is rendered locally in the browser.

## About Configuration Options

### Preview settings

- **Auto-rotate** (Default: Off): Slowly rotate the model around the vertical axis after loading for a full view. Can be toggled anytime in the left panel.
  - `on` — On: Auto-rotate after loading
  - `off` — Off (Recommended): Stay still, rotate manually only (default)

### Animation

- **Clips**: Number of animation clips stored in the file.
- **Bones**: Number of skeleton bones used for rigging and skinning.

## Format Information

### Input format

- **Extension:** stl
- **Full Name:** Stereolithography
- **Type:** 3D Mesh
- **Format:** STL (Binary / ASCII)
- **Tools:** [Cura](https://ultimaker.com/software/ultimaker-cura/), [PrusaSlicer](https://www.prusa3d.com/p/prusaslicer/), [Chitubox](https://www.chitubox.com), [Simplify3D](https://www.simplify3d.com)
- **Open With:** Slicer Software, [MeshLab](https://www.meshlab.net), Windows 3D Viewer, [STL Viewer Online](https://any3d.cc/en-US/tools/stl-viewer)
- **Description:** STL is the de facto standard mesh format in 3D printing, storing only triangular surface data since 1987, without color, texture, or material. Almost all slicers (Cura, PrusaSlicer, Bambu Studio, ChiTuBox) and printers directly support STL, ensuring its enduring popularity.

Two classic pitfalls: STL lacks unit definitions, making millimeters and inches indistinguishable on disk; always verify scale in your slicer. It also has ASCII (readable but 4-6x larger) and binary (compact, default) encodings. For multi-color printing, materials, or parameters, switch to 3MF, which carries richer print information while maintaining slicer compatibility.
- **Supported Features:**
  - Triangle mesh only, simple and universally compatible
  - Binary and ASCII encoding options
  - Directly importable into Cura, PrusaSlicer, Chitubox, etc.
- **Notes:**
  - Does not support colors, textures or materials
  - No unit definition; verify scale in your slicer
  - ASCII format is 4-6× larger than binary

## FAQ

### Why does my STL model look like it has no color?

STL files only store the model's shape, with no color or material data, so the model is displayed in light gray. That is standard for this format in 3D printing workflows.

### What should I do if an STL file won't open?

Confirm the file is actually in STL format and not corrupted. Some programs export STL files that need to be re-exported or converted before this viewer can read them.

### Will small holes or damage on the model surface affect printing?

Yes, surface defects can cause print failures or weak parts. Repair the model in modeling software before slicing, then export a clean STL file for printing.

### How can I check if the model dimensions are correct for printing?

STL files do not store units, so viewers typically assume millimeters. For precise, print-ready measurements, rely on the dimensions reported by your slicer.

### Can I convert an STL file to a colored format like 3MF?

Yes. Use slicing software or this site's STL to 3MF tool. Since STL stores no color data, you must assign colors in the 3MF file either before or after conversion.

### Why do curved surfaces on my STL model look faceted?

STL represents surfaces with flat triangles, so curves appear faceted when zoomed in. More triangles produce smoother curves; this is normal for the format and does not affect print quality in most cases.
