Description:
STL is the de facto standard mesh format in 3D printing, storing only triangular surface data since 1987, without color, texture, or material. Almost all slicers (Cura, PrusaSlicer, Bambu Studio, ChiTuBox) and printers directly support STL, ensuring its enduring popularity. Two classic pitfalls: STL lacks unit definitions, making millimeters and inches indistinguishable on disk; always verify scale in your slicer. It also has ASCII (readable but 4-6x larger) and binary (compact, default) encodings. For multi-color printing, materials, or parameters, switch to 3MF, which carries richer print information while maintaining slicer compatibility.

What is the difference between a photo-to-3D-print and a lithophane?

A

Heightmap mode maps brightness to thickness, ideal for lithophane light panels and photo reliefs; contour mode extracts outlines to extrude solid shapes, suitable for stamps, logos, and silhouettes. You can switch modes and adjust resolution before conversion.

What kind of images work best for STL conversion?

A

For stamps/logos, use transparent backgrounds or high-contrast black-and-white images. For photo reliefs/light panels, use clear, moderately contrasted grayscale or color photos. For complex backgrounds, crop the subject first.

Can the STL be sliced and printed directly after conversion?

A

Contour solids are usually ready for Cura, PrusaSlicer, Bambu Studio, etc. For reliefs/lithophanes, check base thickness and minimum wall thickness, and add supports if needed.

Does the STL retain the image colors?

A

No. STL only stores geometry. For colored models, use 'Image to 3MF' instead; you can also paint after printing.

Why does the conversion fail with a 'no valid contour' error?

A

This happens when no region meets the extraction threshold, typically an almost-uniform image, an overly aggressive threshold, or a very low-contrast subject. Increase the contrast, adjust the threshold or target, or switch to heightmap mode instead.

Why does my relief look too flat, and how do I make it deeper?

A

Heightmap mode maps brightness to height, so a low-contrast source produces a shallow relief. Raise the max height setting (up to 20 mm) and increase the contrast of the source image; low-contrast photos inherently yield flatter results.
