AMF

AMF (Additive Manufacturing File Format) is an XML-based open standard for 3D printing, developed by ASTM. It adds capabilities such as color, material, texture, gradients, and repeating units on top of STL, aiming to become a modern replacement for STL. It supports multiple geometric representations and allows recording print-related metadata within the file.

Although AMF leads in terms of standardization, its ecosystem is far less mature than STL and 3MF: most slicer software still has incomplete support for AMF, and models may lose color or material information when traversing the toolchain. The current de facto modern standard adopted by the 3D printing community is 3MF, while AMF appears more in academic and early color printing scenarios.
