Description:
JPG (JPEG) is the most universal lossy photo format, standardized by the JPEG committee in 1992, offering a good balance between quality and file size, and supported by virtually every device and software. It is ideal for photographs, screenshots, and web images. The downside of JPG is that compression introduces block artifacts and it does not support transparency, causing edges and text to blur. For image-to-3D conversion, JPG suits photographic height maps, but for contour-based conversion, PNG is recommended for clean edges; artifacts at the boundary between dark backgrounds and subject may affect the quality of the generated mesh.

Why convert JPG to PNG?

A

PNG uses lossless compression, which suits archiving, graphics with text, and any workflow that needs pixel-accurate data. Note that compression artifacts already present in the JPG stay embedded in the pixels.

Does the conversion keep the EXIF metadata from my JPG?

A

No. JPG files often carry EXIF data such as camera settings, date, and orientation, but this tool re-encodes the pixels in your browser, so EXIF metadata is not carried over to the PNG.

After converting to PNG, why do text and sharp edges still look soft?

A

PNG is lossless, so the conversion does not degrade anything: the softness comes from the JPG's lossy compression, which is already baked into the pixels. For the crispest result, export from the original source file rather than converting from a compressed JPG.

Can the PNG inherit a transparent background from the JPG?

No. JPG does not support an alpha channel, so the source has no transparency to preserve. The output PNG will be fully opaque.

Does converting JPG to PNG improve 3D texture quality?

PNG is a lossless format, so no data is discarded and there is nothing to adjust: the output size depends entirely on the image content. A quality slider only appears for lossy target formats like JPG and WebP.
